La Soledad de Maciel
(La Chole)
For years the residents
of this farming community,
located about a half hour
south of Zihua, had been
finding artifacts of all
types while going about
their lives. Recently it
was discovered that this
village is sitting in and
on one of Mexico’s most
exciting new archaeological discoveries, the
ancient site of Xihuatlan. Inhabited for
3000 years it has been under
the influence of many of
Mexico’s great cultures. A
series of adobe/river rock
mounds, a reconstructed Meso-
American ball court and a
beautiful new museum allow
you to glimpse back in time
and imagine a life lost to the ages.
The village located here carries on much as it
always has. Farmers tend the same crops grown
a thousand or more years ago. Chilis, maize
melons and beans are all cultivated. Tobacco
is harvested and rolled into cigars both rustic
and fine. We have the opportunity to view a
demonstration of this art, with hand rolled
cigars available for purchase.
We explore the ruins, museum and town with the
company of a local resident and guide to help
with any questions.
